Returning to Yourself: Healing the Disconnect After Trauma

Returning to Yourself: Healing the Disconnect After Trauma

Trauma doesn’t just affect our bodies—it fractures our relationship with ourselves. Many women who have lived through addiction, incarceration, or betrayal describe a deep disconnection from who they are. They no longer recognize their own voice, trust their intuition, or feel safe in their skin.

At Awaken Your Lioness, we believe that healing is about coming home to yourself. It's about gently rebuilding trust, reconnecting with your soul, and remembering that you are not what happened to you—you are who you’re becoming because of it.

How Trauma Disconnects Us

You feel numb, distant, or detached from your emotions

You doubt your ability to make good decisions

You ignore your needs to avoid conflict or rejection

You constantly question your worth or feel like a stranger in your own life

This internal disconnect is a survival response—but over time, it can keep you stuck in cycles of fear, shame, and self-abandonment.

5 Ways to Reconnect With Yourself After Trauma

1. Practice Gentle Self-Awareness

Spend quiet time each day checking in with yourself. Ask: What am I feeling? What do I need? Allow your answers to come without judgment.

2. Rebuild Trust With Small Commitments

Follow through on small promises to yourself: drink water, go for a walk, rest when tired. These moments restore the belief that you are safe with you.

3. Engage in Identity-Reclaiming Practices

What activities, dreams, or values did you lose touch with during survival mode? Begin reintroducing them one by one. Dance again. Journal again. Speak your truth again.

4. Allow Your Inner Voice to Speak

Silence the noise of other people’s expectations. Ask: What do I really believe? What matters to me now? Reclaim your own wisdom.

5. Surround Yourself with Affirming Community

Healing accelerates when you are seen, heard, and valued by others who reflect your worth back to you. Don’t do this alone.

Coming Home to You

Healing is not about becoming someone new. It’s about returning to the woman you were before the world told you who to be.

You are not broken. You are not too far gone.

You are worthy of knowing yourself, trusting yourself, and loving yourself again.

At Awaken Your Lioness, we walk beside women who are ready to return home to themselves—women who are ready to feel whole again.
