Choosing Yourself Again – Why Prioritizing Your Healing Isn’t Selfish

Blog Post: Choosing Yourself Again – Why Prioritizing Your Healing Isn’t Selfish

For women who have spent years in survival mode—people-pleasing, caretaking, enduring trauma, or navigating incarceration—the idea of choosing yourself can feel uncomfortable, even wrong. You've likely been taught to put everyone else first, to minimize your needs, or to wear strength like armor while falling apart inside.

But healing begins when you decide: I matter too.

At Awaken Your Lioness, we believe that choosing yourself—your peace, your growth, your healing—is not selfish. It’s the most courageous decision you can make.

Why It Feels Hard to Choose Yourself

Many women carry invisible messages from past trauma:

  • “My needs don’t matter.”

  • “I have to earn rest or love.”

  • “If I say no, I’ll lose people.”

  • “Focusing on myself is selfish.”

These beliefs are rooted in survival—not truth. They were formed to protect you, but they can also keep you stuck.

Choosing yourself is not abandonment of others—it’s returning to who you were before the world told you otherwise.

What Choosing Yourself Actually Looks Like

  • Saying no to what drains you and yes to what restores you

  • Letting go of roles or expectations that no longer fit

  • Prioritizing therapy, rest, recovery, or spiritual growth

  • Speaking up even when it’s uncomfortable

  • Making decisions based on alignment—not obligation

Each time you choose yourself, you’re building a life based on wholeness instead of survival.

Steps to Start Prioritizing Your Healing

1. Pause and Ask: What Do I Need Right Now?

Give yourself permission to check in. Your needs are not burdens—they are signals guiding you back to peace.

2. Challenge the Guilt

When guilt arises, ask: “Is this true, or is this a survival pattern?” You are allowed to rest. You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to begin again.

3. Create Daily Space for You

Whether it’s five minutes of silence, a journal entry, or a walk without distractions—carve out sacred time that is just for you. Reconnect with your voice.

4. Celebrate Small Acts of Self-Honoring

Choosing yourself doesn’t have to be dramatic. Every boundary you set, every moment of care, every breath of honesty counts.

You’re Not Selfish—You’re Sacred

Choosing yourself isn’t a rejection of others—it’s a commitment to your truth. It’s how you break cycles, build emotional safety, and begin leading your life from a place of peace and power.

At Awaken Your Lioness, we walk alongside women just like you—women who are tired of performing strength and ready to live in wholeness. This journey is yours to claim.

You are not too much. You are not too late. You are worthy of being chosen—by you.
